The School for Strings is a place for your entire family
to join together in the joy of learning and making music!

The School for Strings offers private lessons and group classes.  We offer private violin, viola, cello and double bass lessons in each.  We have students from 5 years old through adults taking beginning, intermediate and advanced lessons. Many parents participate in lessons along with their students and often join our orchestras and our Fidle Club.
We welcome all your family to join in with us as often as possible.
School for Strings Curriculum consists of three components.  We give all our students an annual assessment on their progress in each of these areas.
1. Technical Development on their individual instruments.  This primarily happens in their private lessons though they also receive technical instruction in our ensembles. We follow the American String Teachers Association Certificate Program in Strings guidelines consisting of 10 Levels as Advancement (the highest levels cover university training) which includes scale/keys and etude studies at each level as well as suggested solo repertoire.
2. Music Theory and Fundamentals:  Understanding how music is written is as important for any musician as understanding grammar is for language.  All students receive instruction to develop their aural hearing of music and their understanding of theory and compostion.  Aural theory includes understanding keys through singing as well as playing and writing. Most students will have Music Theory Workbooks with written assignments. The School for Strings Fiddle Club is one of our primary music theory classes where students develop their ear training for chords as well as improvisational skills. The School for Strings offers the only College Advanced Placement in Music Theory instruction in our area.
3. Performances: Solo and Ensemble. The School for Strings hosts several Solo Recitals each year and all students are expected to perform once a year.  Most pieces are composed for a solo instrument plus a piano accompaniment.  Many students have family or friends to play these accompaniments. However, we can provide names of excellent area accompanists for you.
We offer two levels of string orchestra playing: Corelli Strings and Festivo Orchestra. nearly all of our students of all ages and all except the very beginning students play in one of these. Our orchestras perform at least twice a year.  Advanced students often also play in one of our String Quartets or String Trios.  The Fiddle Club also performs frequently.

Schools for Strings Group Classes have been very popular with families of younger beginning students. Groups generally form out of students from our Summer Exploratory Wroskhops with classes starting mid summer.  We limit our groups 4-7 students of similar age and readiness. The group lessons meet weekly for an hour.
